Pan Macmillan acquires Kingfisher for Macmillan Children’s Books
Pan Macmillan has acquired children’s publisher Kingfisher from Houghton Mifflin for an undisclosed sum. Kingfisher will become an imprint of Macmillan Children’s Books in the UK, under Managing Director Emma Hopkin. US operations will be run by Simon Boughton, Publisher of Roaring Brook Press, part of the wider Holtzbrinck Group.
Kingfisher is an award-winning publisher of non-fiction and fiction for children of all ages. Known around the world for its informative and engaging reference and early learning books, Kingfisher also receives widespread acclaim for its classic anthologies for five- to fourteen-year-olds and original picture books for very young children.
The acquisition brings a broad range of publishing in children’s non-fiction to Macmillan. Kingfisher titles sell well globally offering synergies with Holtzbrinck Publishers USA, Pan Macmillan, Macmillan Children’s Books, Priddy Books and Macmillan Education. The acquisition will provide new sales opportunities in all markets.
Emma Hopkin, Managing Director of Macmillan Children’s Books, commented “We are extremely pleased to be acquiring Kingfisher. It gives us a wealth of publishing in the non-fiction market, and a range of mass market fiction titles – with a very strong team of staff. It strengthens our strategic links with our US colleagues and we look forward to working closely with them and the Kingfisher team to enhance Kingfisher’s publishing programme and to increase its sales worldwide.”
David North, Managing Director of Pan Macmillan, added, “We are delighted to have made this acquisition as it will further strengthen Macmillan Children’s Books. The list is a perfect fit with Macmillan’s international companies and emphasizes the commitment from Holtzbrinck to develop its children’s publishing around the world. We look forward to welcoming our new colleagues to the group.”
"I am excited for Kingfisher's creative and talented team's new home to be at world-class Macmillan." said Nancy Grant, Managing Director of Kingfisher Publications. "With a shared commitment to authors and illustrators as well as to the art of fine book making, the joining of these two organizations is a perfect match. The Kingfisher and Macmillan Children's lists complement one another perfectly and I look forward to the wonderful new books to be published."
